Getting Crafty with Packaging Designs

Mumford Brewing is a Los Angeles-based craft brewery that makes all kinds of delicious artisanal brews from black ales and Belgian styles to Imperial stouts and Triple IPAs. The Mumford brand has a fun California vibe that’s laidback, unique, yet experimental. Inspired by references rooted in West Coast Americana, Mumford products are grounded yet forward-thinking, standouts in an exploding beer renaissance in LA.
Can Beers
I find designing packaging for Mumford to be a creative endeavor where the designer is free to be playful and innovative. Unlike the old timer beer brands with their stale and never-changing can designs, Mumford is always innovating. Below are a select few can designs produced with various techniques — from Illustrator vector patterns to fractal equations and cloth simulations in Cinema 4D.
Coasters
Coasters are another canvas in every Brewery’s design arsenal. For this Mumford coaster series, I have written a Processign sketch that generated a new design with each execution. Simple repetition of Mumford’s logo with slightly changing size and rotation created dynamic, intricate and visually pleasing variations.
T-shirts
Love for patterns is something Mumford Brewing and I have in common. Even though this T-shirt design turned out to be challenging for printers, it was a very fun concept to explore.
Color Gradient Beers
For these glass beer packaging designs, I created a series of complex color gradients reminiscent of Mumford Brewing beers on the beach during California sunsets.
